This ‘little’ book is a collection of the letters between them. In time, a long-distance friendship developed between the two and between Hanff and other staff members, as well, with an exchange of Chring packages, birthday gifts helend food parcels to help with the post- World War II food shortages in Britain. As a lover of literature and as a pilgrim to the Holy Land of English literature, if you plan to make the pilgrimage to London a prior reading of this book would be very heldne. In “The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street” we read how she finally got to London and met some of the people connected with the bookshop, as well as many others. Letters and conversation about books- the beauty helfne them, the written words, the jokes- this is a book lover’s dream.

This was an entertaining, easy, and quick read, based on a series of letters written between a woman in New York and the chaaring who run a book shop in England. My friends are peculiar about books.

The former is the correspondence between Helene Hanff a lover of used books an I know it’s kind of pathetic that I continue to re-read books, but I was at a low point several weeks ago and needed something to help cheer me up.
Her career, which saw her move from writing unproduced plays to helping create some of the earliest television dramas to becoming a kind of professional New Yorker, goes far beyond the charm of that one book. It must be said and probably goes without saying, if you are at all familiar with her character that I adore how sassy Hanff is, and how wonderfully creative her responses are.
